The idea

An antonym is a word opposite in meaning to another word. The question gives a word and asks for the option most nearly opposite to it.

Work in two steps. First state the meaning of the given word in plain words. Then state the opposite of that meaning, and only then read the options. This order protects you from the main trap: most of the wrong options are synonyms of the given word, and a hurried reader picks one of them.

You also need the true opposite, not a word that is only different. The opposite of generous is stingy, not poor: both words in a pair must lie on the same scale, here the scale of willingness to give.

Rules to remember

Common mistake

Candidates forget that the question asks for the opposite and choose a synonym, since synonyms fill most of the options. Read the instruction again before you mark the answer.

Worked example

Choose the word most nearly opposite in meaning to TRANSIENT: A brief, B fleeting, C permanent, D gradual.

  1. Transient means lasting only for a short time.
  2. The opposite idea is lasting for ever or for a very long time.
  3. A and B mean the same as transient, so they are synonyms and are wrong.
  4. D is about speed of change, a different scale. C is on the same scale, at the other end.

Answer: C, permanent.
