The idea

In Pakistan fewer girls than boys enrol in school and more drop out, most of all after primary level in rural areas. The usual reasons are distance to school, a lack of female teachers, poverty, early marriage and limits on girls' mobility. Educating girls has multiplier effects: later marriage, lower child mortality and healthier families.

In health the main indicator is the maternal mortality ratio. Most maternal deaths can be prevented by skilled birth attendants and emergency obstetric care.

Most working women are in agriculture, the informal sector and home-based work. Much of this work is unpaid or paid per piece, without contracts or protection, and official statistics often miss it.

Rules to remember

Common mistake

Students calculate the maternal mortality ratio per 1,000 women. It is expressed per 100,000 live births.

Worked example

In one year a province records 300 maternal deaths and 150,000 live births. What is its maternal mortality ratio?

  1. Ratio = maternal deaths ÷ live births × 100,000.
  2. 300 ÷ 150,000 = 0.002.
  3. 0.002 × 100,000 = 200.

Answer: 200 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.
