The idea

The Sun is the main source of energy for living things. Producers (plants) use light energy in photosynthesis to make their own organic nutrients. Almost all other organisms get their energy by eating producers or by eating animals that ate producers. That is why life depends on photosynthesis.

A food chain shows the transfer of energy from one organism to the next. The arrow means "is eaten by" and points the way the energy goes. A food web is a network of linked food chains.

Each feeding stage is a trophic level. Only a small part of the energy passes to the next level. The rest is transferred to the environment, mostly as heat from respiration.

Rules to remember

Common mistake

Students draw the arrows from the eater to the food. The arrow always points from the organism that is eaten to the organism that eats it, the direction of energy flow.

Worked example

The primary consumers in a field take in 6000 kJ of energy in their food. 3300 kJ is lost in faeces and 2100 kJ is lost by respiration. What percentage of the 6000 kJ is available to secondary consumers?

  1. Total lost = 3300 + 2100 = 5400 kJ.
  2. Energy stored in new body tissue = 6000 − 5400 = 600 kJ.
  3. Percentage = (600 ÷ 6000) × 100 = 10%.

Answer: 10% (600 kJ) is available to the secondary consumers.
