The idea

Pakistan lies in South Asia, north of the Tropic of Cancer. Lines of latitude run east to west and tell you how far north a place is. The Tropic of Cancer (23½°N) passes just south of Karachi, 30°N crosses the middle of the country and 36°N crosses the mountainous far north.

Lines of longitude run north to south and tell you how far east a place is. 64°E crosses western Balochistan, 70°E the centre and 76°E the far north-east.

Pakistan has four neighbours and a coast on the Arabian Sea. Its ports give landlocked Afghanistan and Central Asia a short route to the sea.

Rules to remember

Common mistake

Students mix up latitude and longitude. Latitude is given as °N and shows north or south position; longitude is given as °E and shows east or west position.

Worked example

A city in Pakistan is at about 25°N, 68°E. In which part of the country does it lie?

  1. 25°N is between the Tropic of Cancer (23½°N) and 30°N, so the city is in the south.
  2. 68°E is between 64°E and 70°E, so it is west of the centre line but not in the far west.
  3. The south of Pakistan between these lines of longitude is lower Sindh.

Answer: It lies in lower Sindh (this is the position of Hyderabad).
