The idea

Managers get things done through other people. The traditional functions are planning (setting objectives and how to reach them), organising (arranging people and resources), directing (leading and motivating staff) and controlling (checking results against the plan and correcting them). Fayol first listed functions like these.

Mintzberg looked at what managers really do and found ten roles in three groups: interpersonal, informational and decisional.

A management style is the way a manager deals with staff and makes decisions. The style often follows the manager's beliefs about workers, which McGregor called Theory X and Theory Y. No style is always best: it depends on the staff, the task and the time available.

Rules to remember

Common mistake

Theory X and Theory Y do not describe two types of worker. They describe two sets of beliefs that managers hold about workers.

Worked example

After a meeting at head office, a branch manager calls her team together and explains the company's new returns policy. Which of Mintzberg's roles is she carrying out?

  1. The task is about passing on information, so it belongs to the informational group.
  2. The information goes to her own staff inside the business, not to outsiders.
  3. Passing information to people inside is the disseminator role; speaking to outsiders would be the spokesperson role.

Answer: Disseminator, an informational role.
