The idea

People often ignore good health advice. One reason is unrealistic optimism: the belief that bad events are less likely to happen to me than to other people like me. Weinstein (1980) asked college students to rate their own chances of future life events compared with their classmates. Most rated their chances of good events as above average and of bad events as below average, which cannot be true for the group as a whole.

Positive psychology (Seligman) is the scientific study of what makes life go well, not only of what goes wrong. It describes three kinds of happy life: pleasant, good and meaningful.

Shoshani and Steinmetz (2014) tested a positive psychology programme in a school in Israel.

Rules to remember

Common mistake

Students swap the good life and the meaningful life. The good life is about being absorbed in what you are good at; the meaningful life adds a purpose beyond yourself.

Worked example

A nurse loves her job because she becomes fully absorbed when using her skill at calming frightened patients, and time passes without her noticing. Which of Seligman's lives is described?

  1. She is not described as seeking pleasure or comfort, so it is not the pleasant life.
  2. Nothing is said about serving a wider cause, only about her experience of the work.
  3. Being fully absorbed while using a personal strength is engagement, or flow.

Answer: The good life.
