The idea

Each crop grows where the climate, water and soil suit it, so learn every crop with its area, needs and uses. The four main crops are wheat (the staple food), rice, cotton and sugar cane. Most are grown on the irrigated Indus Plain in Punjab and Sindh.

Fruit follows temperature. Apples and apricots need cold winters, so they grow in the northern and western highlands. Mangoes, bananas and dates need great heat, so they grow in the southern plains.

Livestock also match the land. Buffalo and cattle are kept on the irrigated plains where there is fodder and water. Sheep and goats survive on the thin grazing of dry and mountain areas.

Rules to remember

Common mistake

Students mix up the sugar cane by-products. Bagasse is the crushed stalk burned as fuel; molasses is the thick syrup left after the sugar is taken out.

Worked example

A farmer near Mirpur Khas in Sindh has very hot summers, mild winters and canal water. Which fruit suits the farm best: apples, apricots or mangoes?

  1. Apples and apricots need a cold winter to fruit well, which southern Sindh does not have.
  2. Mangoes need a hot climate with no frost and a good water supply.
  3. The farm has heat and canal water, so the conditions match mangoes.

Answer: Mangoes. Lower Sindh is one of Pakistan's main mango areas.
