A population pyramid shows the share of males and females in each age group. Pakistan’s has a wide base and a narrow top: many children, because the birth rate is high, and few old people. As birth rates fall, the base narrows and the working-age middle widens.
Population grows when births are more than deaths. After 1947 the death rate fell quickly because of better health care, vaccination and clean water, but the birth rate fell slowly, so the population grew fast.
Rapid growth puts pressure on food, water, housing, schools, hospitals and jobs. The main solutions are family planning, later marriage and, above all, the education of girls.
