The idea

Telecommunications means sending information over a distance by radio, television, telephone and the internet. Unlike transport, it moves information, not goods or people, and it does so almost at once.

Questions ask you to match a use to a sector. In education it brings lessons to people far from a school or campus. In industry and trade it lets firms take orders, agree designs and check prices quickly. In services it supports banking, health advice and government information.

Remote areas are hard to serve: mountains block signals, electricity is unreliable and there are few customers to pay for the equipment. Without coverage these areas fall further behind.

Rules to remember

Common mistake

Students give a transport improvement, such as a new road, as an example of telecommunications. Telecommunications only carries information, so the goods still have to be moved.

Worked example

A health worker in a remote valley of Chitral can now make video calls to a hospital doctor in Peshawar. Why is this a benefit to the valley?

  1. The journey to Peshawar is long and the mountain road may be blocked by snow or landslides.
  2. A video call lets the doctor see the patient and give advice within minutes.
  3. Only serious cases then need to travel, which saves families time and money.

Answer: It improves a service (health care) by replacing a slow, costly journey with a fast flow of information.
